How to Repair & Replace a DELL INSPIRON 1545 LCD Screen

The DELL INSPIRON 1545 model laptop uses a liquid-crystal display (LCD) screen as a display. If the laptop is dropped, sat on or otherwise damaged, the screen may crack. Rather than replace the laptop, it’s more cost-efficient to replace the DELL INSPIRON 1545 LCD screen. Disassembly and Removing the LCD Screen

Turn the laptop off and unplug the power adapter. Unplug any external keyboards, mice or speakers. Remove any PCMCIA cards from thepr slots, located on the side of the laptop. Disconnect any other attached devices, such as external CD-ROM units or hard drives.

Close the laptop and turn it upside-down. Slide and hold the battery-bay latch, then slide the primary battery out of the laptop. Remove the secondary battery if it is present. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws from the bottom of the laptop that hold the hard drive in place (the hard drive is located along the edge of the computer with the speaker output ports) and then slide the hard drive out.

Turn the laptop over and open the display. Use the flat-bladed screwdriver to carefully lift up the notched edge of the central control cover then continue pulling it up and away from the laptop with your fingertips until it comes free. The central control cover is the strip of plastic that runs along the top of the keyboard and has the power switch on it. Close the display. Pop off the hinge covers with the flat-bladed screwdriver.

Remove the five screws on the back edge of the laptop that hold on the display hinges with the Phillips screwdriver. Two screws hold the right hinge and three screws the left hinge.

Open the display so it lies flat, with the screen facing up. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold the EMI shield bracket in place. These screws are located next to the left hinge. Remove the EMI shield bracket to find the display-ribbon cable connector.

Pull straight up on the display-ribbon cable connector to disconnect it from the system board. Lift the entire display assembly up and out of the bottom case. It should come free easily. Set aside the bottom case.

Pry the six rubber screw covers out of the screw holes on the display bezel (the plastic area surrounding the DELL INSPIRON 1545 LCD screen) with the flat-bladed screwdriver. Remove the six screws from the bezel with the Phillips screwdriver. Use the edge of the flat-bladed screwdriver to gently pry the bezel from the display assembly without damaging the screen or any underlying components.

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws from each side of the LCD screen, then remove the single screw that attaches the display cable to the display assembly. If necessary, disconnect the display cable from the bottom of the LCD screen by pulling straight up on the cable tab. Many replacement DELL INSPIRON 1545 LCD screens come with a display cable already attached to the screen.

Lift the LCD screen out of the display assembly. Set aside.

Replacing the LCD Screen and Reassembly

Place the new LCD screen into the display assembly by inserting the bottom of the screen first and then gently laying down the top portion, making sure there is nothing preventing the screen from lying perfectly flat. If necessary, connect the display cable to the bottom of the LCD screen. Replace the two screws that attach each side of the LCD screen to the display assembly (four screws total) with the Phillips screwdriver. Position the display bezel on the display assembly and snap it back into place by applying gentle pressure to each edge. Replace the six screws that attach the bezel to the display assembly with the Phillips screwdriver. Line up the hinges with the hinge cavities in the bottom case. Lower the display down into the bottom case. Reconnect the display-ribbon cable connector to the system board. Replace the EMI shield bracket. Replace the two EMI shield bracket screws using the Phillips screwdriver. Close the display.

Replace the two screws on the right hinge and three screws on the left hinge with the Phillips screwdriver. Pop the hinge covers back on the hinges. Open the display and replace the central control cover, pressing gently on it until it snaps into place. Close the display and turn it upside-down. Replace the primary battery in the battery bay. Replace the hard drive by sliding it back into the hard drive bay and replace the two hard drive screws using the Phillips screwdriver. Turn the laptop back over and open the display.

Plug the power adapter into the laptop and then into a wall socket. Press the power button. The Dell POST (Power On Self-Test) screen should display, indicating that the new LCD screen is functioning properly.
